On January 22, 2020, the World Health Organization (WHO) met in an emergency session to discuss a response to the coronavirus outbreak.  The WHO Committee did not declare an emergency and will meet again on January 23, 2020, to continue to discuss the WHO response to the outbreak.

Update on coronavirus outbreak,  This information is current as of 23 Jan 2020 at 0730hrs EST.   The coronavirus is now know as 2019 -nCoV, it is a new strain of coronavirus not previously identified in humans.  Two Chinese cities, Wuhan with a population of 11 million, and Huanggang with a population of 7 million have been placed on lockdown with public transportation suspended.  There are 500 confirmed cases with 17 deaths in China.  Thailand has reported 4 cases.  Japan, Taiwan, South Korea, and the United States have 1 reported case each.

The following is an update on the current outbreak involving Coronavirus. This is information is current as of 0800hrs EST 22 Jan 2020. There have been 9 deaths and 440 individuals reported infected in China. The virus has been confirmed to be transmitted from human to human with at least 15 medical workers infected.  There are cases in Japan, Thailand, South Korea, Taiwan, and the United States.

The coronavirus outbreak in China has claimed six lives.  There are more than 300 cases reported.  Millions of Chinese preparing to travel for the Lunar New Year, increasing the risk the outbreak will spread.

On January 16, 2020, the World Health Organization reported three new Ebola cases in the Democratic Republic of Congo. There is one new reported death.  This brings the outbreak to  3,409 infections.

The Chinese Government confirmed human-to-human transmission in the outbreak of a new coronavirus. Chinese officials confirmed there have been more than 200 cases during the outbreak. The World Health Organization is holding an emergency meeting.

According to an article in Nature Immunology researchers have used CRISPER Cas9 to discover a T-cell and its receptor that could find and kill a wide range of cancerous cells in the lab. While this discovery is the first of its kind, it is in the early stages and needs more research.  There is potential in this discovery to identify new forms of cancer treatment.

Christian Drosten, the director of the Institute for Virology at Berlin’s Charite hospital, said the test developed by his team will allow labs to reliably diagnose the novel coronavirus “in a very short period of time.”
